Things to do in Mount Kenya
Nyeri, Meru & Laikipia

Africa's second-highest mountain at 5,199m, Mount Kenya is Kirinyaga to the Kikuyu — the place of light and home of Ngai. Its glaciated peaks rise above forest, moorland and highland farms.
Best time to visit
January to February and August to September are the driest trekking windows, between the long and short rains.
Getting there
Three to four hours north of Nairobi by road to Nanyuki or Naro Moru, where the main route gates and guiding outfits are based.
What to do
Trek to Point Lenana
At 4,985m, reachable in three to five days by any fit walker — no ropes needed.
Walk the vegetation zones
Bamboo, podocarpus forest and surreal giant groundsel and lobelia on the moorland.
Trout fishing
Clear mountain streams around the base are stocked with trout.
Forest game viewing
Elephant, buffalo and colobus in the cool forest belt circling the mountain.
Dawn at the peaks
First light on Batian and Nelion is the mountain's finest moment.
Technical climb to Batian
The true 5,199m summit, for experienced mountaineers with a guide.
Good to know
- • Altitude sickness is real on the Lenana trek — build in an acclimatisation day.
- • Guides and porters are arranged in Nanyuki or Naro Moru and are strongly recommended.
- • Pack for tropical heat at the base and below-freezing nights at altitude.
- • Book huts and camps ahead in the January and August peaks.
